How can I find out about a great uncle who hanged himself in the 1950s? I don't know the parish, but I remember my mother telling me how he had died and that he was buried outside the churchyard in unconsecrated ground.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Josie

If you know his name then you can look in BMD's for his death. If you buy the death certificate you will have the exact date of death and can use this at the library nearest to where the death took place to see if there was a newspaper report of the inquest. These newspaper reports usually have quite a lot of detail, and most libraries hold back copies of local newspapers on microfilm.

If you don't live near the place of death then sometimes the library staff will look for you if you can give them the date of death.

Hi Josephine,

If you haven't got access to BMDs on here, if you want to pm me the name I'll see if I can find it for you.

Try http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ where he 'may' be listed as a death. The 1950's is on the cusp of the current transcribed data.

You could make a search on this site from the British Newspaper Archive. If you identify a possible article someone could give you the details, or you could search at the source on http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk
