Hi,

I have Henry Goodchild born c.1855 Sydenham Oxfordshire, he married Marjorie Ord. I searched Henry on the 1861 census and got a match for him born 1853 Sydenham with him being the brother to the head of the house, but the head of the house is a man called George Jones (34) and his wife Rhoda Jones (31).

Please can someone help me with this as I am puzzled. :-S

What if Henry Goodchild was the younger Half brother of George Jones? Georges Mum couldve remarired a Goodchild and had Henry. The census wouldnt have specified 'half brother'

I think a marriage cert would help me in my quest to find his parents. Would there be a reason for him moving from Oxfordshire to Yorkshire? Iron mining was his occupation, would this have been big in Yorkshire?

I had found much the same as Nicola and GlitterBaby but they were a bit quicker than me. As a possibility though, there is a tree on another site which has Henry Goodchild's parents as John Goodchild and Esther Vernon. While you should never take information on another tree as correct without checking yourself, if Rhoda Jones' maiden name was Vernon as seems likely then the connection with Henry is there. You need to try to find out how Esther and Rhoda were connected. Sisters? Mother and illegitimate daughter?

EDIT: In the 1841 census Esther Vernon is around 30 and has 4 children including 9 year old Rhoda. Haven't time to check further but it looks as though Esther has been widowed, so she probably remarried and Henry is from the second marriage. This would make him Rhoda's half brother.

According to the Census, Emily Ann was born Shirburn, Oxfordshire



In other words, another of Henry's half-sisters.

Thank you, the tree you have just provided must be him as that is his wife and children I knew about with correct birth years.

But I dont know about any Holly's or Claudia's. Will look into it further.
