Amongst family papers i have found a Conditional pardon from 1840 releasing a relative from prison on the condition he left the country for the remainder of his sentence.
I found the quarter session for his sentencing and he was sentenced to 3 years for assault in June 1838.
His name was James Dickinson, born 1816, sentenced at Preston and his term carried out at Lancaster Castle until he was pardoned on 16th October 1840.
Does anyon ehave any idea where i could find more information about his case? why he was pardoned, and would he have recieved a FULL pardon when his sentence was seen through?

many thanks

Nicola
