I sent away for my father's military record (WWII).and paid my £30.

The acknowledgement letter I received a while later informed me that it could take up to twelve months before it will be sent to me due to the numbers f requests being made. :-0

You should be aware that service records are provided free to the next of kin in the first instance. It is possible to obtain them provided the next of kin signs the downloaded application form mentioned above.

If you are not the spouse or civil partner of the subject, you will be required to pay a fee of £30. You will also be required to provide a copy of the death certificate if the serviceman's death followed discharge from the service

Try this link to the National Archives

http://goo.gl/JPLXo

Further links from that page will enable you to order the records. There will be a charge c£30 and a wait of some months.

You could search for his name on http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/ to see if he was awarded a medal or obtained a Commission. It might be difficult to identify him if he had a common name.

He would have been too young for WW1 so his records will not be online.

Do you know when he was born?

If he was in the first world war then his records MAY be online although a lot of them were destroyed in a fire.

If he was in the second world war then his records will still be with the MOD.
