I'm trying to track down Alfred Croft, but the first record I can find is in the 1881 census when he was 13 and at Grove Park School in Wrexham Regis,Denbighshire. He was born in Crewe,Cheshire in about 1868 but I would like to find who his parents were so that I can work back in the family history. I then can't find him again until 1901 aged 33, married to Florence A.(maiden name Field) , a self-employed pharmacist. Any help in filling the gaps would be much appreciated. |

That's certainly a possibility, although he was CROFT without an S. I see on that census that his mother is listed as a school matron---perhaps that's why he was at a boarding school at 13. |

Can i just say that the importance of a name ending in (S) and the accurate spelling/ recording was not a priority in times gone by, people would simply record it as they heard it |

Thanks everyone, that's a great help. Going back, it seems(loads of checking to be done) that his father was a furnace builder and that his grandparents were Jos.and Phoebey, Jos. being a labourer born about1778. |
