Hi Steve

What do you think of the rest of my post? It just occurred to me that as there is a 'Freshwater' birth in Epping - and Freshwater is not the most common of names - that perhaps it might be worth investigating, even if just to eliminate it. I know it is George W but it is very easy to just use another name.

It just seems very very odd to me that the other siblings have their certs but not your Dad! How do we know how old we are/when we were born - we are told by our parents! When we are toddlers, especially if children are close in age then 12 or 18 months difference doesn't make much difference - especially if you have always been told you are younger or older than your sibling.

Also 1938 was a convenient gap in the marriage/births sequence: Marriage 1936, Birth 1937, ?? 1938, Birth 1939, Birth 1940.

Just strange coincidences that the original cert is missing and so it seems is the record.

Is this the marriage of your father's parents?

Winifred V Freshwater married Sidney Gough [?
Name: FRESHWATER, Winifred V
Registration district: [?] Epping
County: Essex
Year of registration: 1936
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's last name Gough
Volume no: [?] 4A
Page no: [?] 1160

Because I wondered if: (because it is an Epping birth)

Civil registration event: Birth

Name: FRESHWATER, George W
Registration district: [?] Epping
County: Essex
Year of registration: 1935
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Freshwater >>>>>>>>>>>
Volume no:[?]4A
Page no:[?]514

Do you think it possible there could be some 'amendment' to his date of birth in the family? And where is his original birth certificate? Assuming the others have theirs as you said on a previous post that all the siblings have Freshwater shown? And you also said your grandfather originally came from Shropshire? Do you know when?

Just some thoughts...

Janet

In all probability he is on FreeBMD but mistranscribed.

Have found loads of my missing rellies on FreeBMD under some odd and unusual names, none of which were theirs!!!!

Spent weeks going through a single surname a few years ago and listing all those with incomplete records on births, writing them down and then going to Ancestry and checking the original pages. Enters nearly 100 amendments on the births alone. Surname Brain in Bristol area.

I think Thelma is correct - he is definitely missing from the GRO indexes and I've looked at the images for the late entries too. I think you will need to visit the local office and get them to look through the original records that they hold. Don't know if you can do it by phone or e-mail but that's your only hope now.

Good luck!

Thelma

It is possible that the details did not reach the GRO.
Last time I bought a cert. from the local office I filled out a form paid the money and was given the cert. in 10 minutes but sometimes they will post it to you.
Ps
If they cannot provide a cert. they will refund your money.
