Have you tried looking for him or agnes living with a son or daughter ?by 1881 both him and wife could have died?

dont enter too much details on a census search as year of births may vary by a few years.

Thanks you for all your help!

mgnv - fantastic information about the 1855 childs birth certificate and the uncle's death certificate, will get right on to that. Janet and James did die in Yorkshire sadly so no really useful information from thier death certificates.

Katie,
I would guess that the 1841 census in Paisley, posted by Reggie will be the correct family.

James's father on this census was called David.
As per tradition, a 1st son was named for his father's father.
James's 1st son was called David.

FreeCEN's 1851 differs from Reggie's posted 1851 - it adds a child (for Robt, I guess)

You can confirm the date and place of the marr from a child's 1855 b.cert - this was dropped off the b.cert 1856-1860.
I presume James and Janet died in England, so there's probably no way to confirm their parents.

This looks like Uncle Robt, so you can get James's grandparents from Robt's d.cert, assuming the informant knew the info.

You refer to Andrew Ritchie Smith, and say his birth was 1826.......

Perhaps you could clarify

Katie

Katie Report 8 Aug 2012 13:03

That really bugs me! hopefully I can get his father off his 2nd Marriage certificate that I've ordered.

How else could I trace Janet Ritchie and her family? or have I reached the end of the line?

BeverleyW Report 8 Aug 2012 12:40

The marriage is indexed on ScotlandsPeople in Pre-1855 Banns and Marriages.
If you buy some credits and view the entry you may or may not find some useful info.
I purchased the entry for my 2xgreat grandparents and all I got was their names (which I already knew!) - no ages, parents or occupations :-(

ScotlandsPeople's notes say you will find -
"At best:
date(s) of the proclamation of intended marriage and/or date of marriage, names of bride and groom and their parish of residence, sometimes the occupation of the groom and occasionally the name of the bride's father.
At worst:
the names of the bride and groom recorded along with the fee paid in caution. "

I don't think that is them in the census as James was a Worsted Weaver in the censuses I've worked back from.

Thier son Andrew Ritchie Smith is my partner's Great Grandfather.

Civil Registration came into force in Scotland in 1855................so no cert

How have you worked back to this couple?

Is one of their children your line?

Katie

Katie Report 8 Aug 2012 11:32

I have found the marriage of Janet RITCHIE and James SMITH, 24th March 1850, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland on familysearch.org

Would there be a certificate I could order which would have details of the father's and occupations on to confirm this is the marriage I am looking for?

Where would I be able to get it from if there was?

Thanks,

Katie
