Hi,

My name is David Gunniss and I am a complete beginner in family trees but have decided i would like to do it. So, if anyone else is compiling a Gunniss family tree please inbox me.

Gunniss is a pretty unusual name so it should be easy or so they say! but nothing is EVER easy, I need some help, so any volunteers?

Thanks,

David :-)

Hi David, welcome to the boards.
As you say, with this name it might not be too bad - but on the other hand, it is a name which will be open to variations in spelling! So be aware of this.
Have you started off yet? Begin with what you know and work back methodically. Use as much family info as you can, ask questions of any elderly relatives you have, but be sure to back up with evidence

For looking for births, marriages and deaths 1837-about 1955 you can't beat Freebmd:

www.freebmd.org.uk

Have a go at finding births or marriages for your grandparents, to get yourself familiar with the site.

Have fun!

Hello David, above right is the Search item on the menu - using that you can search trees to see if anyone else is researching the same people.

A word of warning though, don't take any information that people have in their trees as being correct, always verify.

Thanks Jan I have tried freeBMD and have quite a lot of info.

I think I have the 'bug' already as it is very interesting.

Well, what I advise is to go as far as you can, then ask for advice if you get stuck. I would do as much for yourself as you can, as it's much more satisfying.
You can look for contacts as suggested by MarieCeleste, but be aware there are also several members who like nothing better than helping out! So just put any queries on here.

Thanks for the advise Jan! Much appreciated!

I have done quite a bit on the tree from what I already know. I read somewhere that the GR family tree isn't very good and it would be best to get another online template that is able to be backed upon disc, What's your advise?

Not the best person to ask regarding that I'm afraid! I have a tree on Ancestry which suits me fine, but there are better ones I suspect.
I would post a general query regarding this.

David
I had a look at the 1911 census and there are about 5 or 6 different families called Gunniss living in Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Hampshire.
Older people seem to be Irish born but no pattern to one single place.
Mayo, Down and Wicklow!
The 1901 census also includes a couple of Gunniss families living in Lanarkshire

If you give some details of the families you are researching, I can post all census data here if you need it

Eringobragh1916 Report 2 Aug 2012 23:07

An Edward Wells Gunniss married Eliza.Clarke 1871 Reg.March quarter Boston. 7a 476.

This ? corresponds with details for Herbert living with mother Eliz, and Clarke grandparents 1881 census.

Would imagine there may be other children of the marriage prior to Herbert being born...need to locate an Ed Wells Gunniss 1881 Census.

I just wanted to ask "am I doing this right'

I have a standard membership but then you get credits which cost too and I seem to use credits when accessing information, is this right?

Also when you access the BDM website it gives you the info ie Volume no. and page number. How do you access that volume and page and what info does that give you?

Is there anyone in the Neath area I can talk to face to face?
