Bryan Report 1 Aug 2012 16:27

I am trying to trace the parents of my Grandfather Horace White who was registered in the 1881 Census as being an inmate in the Shoreditch Workhouse Kingsland Road. Any advice on where the record of his parents might be would be priceless!

Thanks

Bryan :-D

Can I ask how you know this Horace White was your Grandfather?

Have you found him on the 1891 census?

Have you a copy of his birth certificate which would give his father's name?

I guess you must be able to identify his marriage to your grandmother so that should give you his father's name if you purchase the certificate?

Horace R White, son of Alfred and Martha, is with his parents and siblings in the 1881 census so discount that one.
As rootgatherer suggests, it might be worth investigating Horace Skeates White s/o Thomas and Margaret b. 20 June 1871. Perhaps one or both parents died which may have been why he was in the workhouse.
Interestingly this particular Horace had a brother, Herbert Henry White, born in December 1873. In 1881 Herbert was at the Shoreditch Industrial School in Brentwood.
Also, there is a Horace White age 20 born Hackney in the 1891 census as a Pte. with the Norfolk Regiment camped in Colchester. That would follow the pattern of a workhouse child.
However, if he is your Grandfather you would probably know this already? Do you know if he had a brother?

Bryan Report 3 Aug 2012 00:14

Horace Skeats White is my Grandfather, it is he that was in the Workhouse in 1871 AND at the Army Barracks in 1891 as posted so everything fits.

He died in 1951 aged 80 and is buried in Shakelgate Lane cemetery in Teddington, Mum and I visited his unmarked grave last October.

She climbed out of her wheelchair to stand at his graveside for the first time since 1953 and we placed a simple stone HSW 1871 -1951.

It was one of the best moments in my life. Mum always wanted to know her roots but alas she passed six weeks ago and I am the poorer for the fact she never knew.

I know Herbert, my grandfather brother went to Canada probably about 1900-1910. As we cleared mums house a wrist bracelet with the crest of the Royal Canadian Engineers dropped out of a box. So a tantalising clue.

Thanks to all on here who have given me the links I need to work on his line I am in your debt. This site works!
