That problem with the suggestions thread summary being blank returned. It's OK again now but I had to restart the PC to fix it this time.

I'm typing this on the Beta site I must say I do prefer the green background colour of the original site.

The light grey is a step forward and better than being all white but I'm not convinced it's the right colour.

I have both sites open side by side on my computer to get a true comparison.

I have managed to upload one photo onto the new tree but that's it. Doesn't matter how many times I try it just doesn't like me.

:-(

Also I find it interesting that members are saying they are sending screen shots to support but I have been told in the past they can't accept attachments.

Also find the photo's interesting that pop up on the site. While typing the above post on the side of the screen I was looking at a photo of sushi.

There certainly has been some random photos.

I have a lot of pros about the beta site ......... but you mentioned on the first page ......................

"I never thought of that Ken but think that it comes back to whether the back ground is to bright?

It would be interesting to see what others think both the older and younger eyes?
My eye sight is not good so i probably see things in a different light"

-----------------

I still find the background too bright ...........

...... I'm not sure whether I am older or younger than you ( :-D ), but I thought you might be interested in this ....................

I had cataracts done in 2001. They changed my eyesight from very poor to long sighted, so I only need glasses for reading and the computer.

So, I would say my eyesight is now very good.

However, since then, I have discovered that things are much brighter, and often uncomfortably bright .......

............... this is a generally accepted feature of "new" eyes. I find myself wearing sunglasses on days when most other people do not need them.

I find the sun glaring.

I find those halogen headlights on cars very uncomfortable.

I find white pages and paper dazzling.

Even the new very pale grey of the background on the beta site is still dazzling.

Combine that with the stark hard contrast of black type .................. and I find the beta site very uncomfortable to use.

I have not so far managed more than about 30 minutes on there ................... yet I can spend hours and hours on the current one.

There did use to be a standard that basically said that beiges and shades of pale green were the most restful backgrounds for long term computer use OR when reading.

There are some other hard contrasts in colour on the beta site .................. and some that fade compared to others.

For example, after typing a post, the Preview tab is much darker than the Submit, and thus seems more prominent ............ people tend to click on the most prominent :-D

The site certainly seems to move easily, with fewer problems than on here.

I would still like there to be fewer things on the Home Page .................. but as I hardly ever look on there, I can't even suggest what I would like to see! Phil did ask that question!!

I even tried my tree, which is a novelty for me!! I managed to move around in it with no problems...... but would like different colours for male and female.

.......... and would in fact like to do away with that orange box with a number in it ........

.......... it is far too prominent and obtrusive, and do I really really want to know that I have 1169 Matches with Living Living b.c1974, or 1122 with Living Relative b.ca.1938 :-0 :-0

It is still a work in progress so far as I am concerned, but it's getting there!

off to bed now ............. :-D

one of the photos that popped up for me onthe beta site was of a female beach volleyball player ....... presumably connected to the Olympics.

She was wearing a T-shirt, and, I think/hope, thong bottoms ........................ but it was pretty hard to tell whether or not she was or not

pretty risque stuff for a genealogical site!

:-D :-D :-D :-D

Oh Sylvia please don't make me laugh again as it hurts.

I'll have to go back to the site to see if I can see the photo for myself.

Too funny

:-D

I had FMP advertising on the original site last night when i was looking at the boards. It's been awhile since the Ancestry ads have appeared so they must be due again soon.

I am also comparing original site with beta site. For example, when I compare the screen for Message Centre looking at my inbox, currently I do not have messages in my Inbox so on the original site I can see the inbox and my options in the Genes greenish colour range, a few ads from national lottery in colour but when i look at the background surrounding all of it then it seems to be a very white background.

The best way I can describe it is as a white linen tablecloth with place settings - so the background is white but the boxes placed on it draw the eye because they are in brighter and/or darker colours.

Now when I compare that to the same screens on Beta site the background colour is not like a white linen tablecloth, it is a muted grey colour but the boxes on the background are lighter - thus bringing them to the fore and making the specific area being considered / concentrated on the brighter aspect on the screen.

Similarly when I compare the screen for this board - as I complete this post the left hand side of my screen is a grayish shade (boxes and a picture higher up the left hand side of the screen), the post above is a beige / grey shade but where I am completing my post is the black text on a white background both inside and outside the post box - again making it stand out .

Comparing like for like, I can manage equally well with both sites, but it could be because my computer screen is in a cupboard without natural light, I don't know if it would be more glaring in natural light. So although I agree it seems to glare more the impact on me is not excessive.

I will make a suggestion that perhaps on the Post area of threads the outer background should be more muted so that the inner area is the main section that stands out.

On the matter of feedback to Genes Team, I have sent an email with an attachment, I have also cut and paste sections of screen prints directly into an email with my notes / comments. Visually it must be easier than trying to work out exactly what is being described in words (as I am sure my table cloth explanation above proves!).

I gave feedback on font sizes too, where I considered a slight increase in font size would be easier for me - and there is the thing we are all different, so any feedback whether positive or negative, if we give reasons then it can only help the developers working on the Beta site and hopefully provide a site that gives the best user experience possible.

Roy,

Sorry, perhaps I didn't make it clear. I mean the headings "Immediate Family", "Ancestors", "Full Tree" etc. On mine they are tiny, about the size of telephone directory print.

Sylvia,

Many years ago some experiments were done about print and paper colours, and the most stressfree result was black print on pale green paper. Black on white was one of the least popular!!

Second edit!

This is the first message I have done on the new site and I am impressed by the speed with which it was added. No more going back through the pages after submission. A great improvement.

Andysmum, I am on the beta at the moment and GR appear to have made more changes,

the view other trees font has been enlarged and i think also the font for "Immediate Family", "Ancestors", "Full Tree" etc.

Take another look and see what you think.

also what zoom level are you using on your browser

I will add that before i go to the beta site i clear my cache Just incase they have updated as that has been a problem on the main site in the past

I think you're right - I can't keep up with these changes. I'm not used to GR moving so fast!!

I'm just happy that GR are addressing the issues and have finally allowed members to get involve with the testing and trying to resolve the problems

Sylvia, ( I'm not sure whether I am older or younger than you ( :-D )

I will have you know I’m only 21 year old and have been for the last 35 years ;-)

I need glasses to see and reading glasses to read And as JannieAnnie pointed out we are all different

I asked my son and daughter in law to have a look at the beta site and they thought it was fine, the problem is that GR need to appeal to both the younger and older community and suspect the end result will be that the Makeover should be a look that suits both,

I can see the logic in the preview button being more prominent than the submit button as it is probably best to check your text before publishing/submitting although on the main site they look the same but I never use the preview button anyway (Maybe I should ?)

The problem I think with the amount of clutter on the home page is that as that’s the first page members see when they log on so that makes it’s the best place to show what the site has to offer for new users the only alternative I can think of would be to add this clutter to the "site map" page and put the link in a more prominent place, it's at the very bottom of the page at the moment, however i believe the site map is currently being worked on?

(We are currently working on reimplementation of the site map. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause)

So have I, although they are very pale - anaemic perhapa??

I have also lost the zoom and arrow buttons at the bottom.

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Jul 2012 21:10

Andysmum, the navigation tool with the zoom function is still their but is very faint, "same colour as the page" no doubt due to the other changes on that page, I have reported it
