I thought i would start this thread for members helping with the beta testing and those who generally like the new tree to post,

Their are lots of threads with negative comments about the new tree so i would prefer this thread to be a platform for members with positive comments and ideas to help members experiencing problems

For members who don't have access to the beta site then feel free to join in with positive constructive comments only please,
If you have negative comments then please use one of the many other threads to air your grievances

Just to add to my OP If you are having problems with the new tree may i suggest trying to use the facility provided by GR on how to use the new tree under the help tab's FAQ
the new version has new instruction on how to input your data

If you have tried using these instruction and are still having problems then report them to GR

Although other members may be able to help, The community boards are not their for reporting problems with the site

Having looked at the beta today they have changed the font on the community boards although the back ground remains bright it is much easier to read now,

also the Family tree page has changed but not sure if its for the best?
The page Header is less clutered but that has removed the link for sending feedback and the help button through that page, so i would be interested what anyone else thinks? I have sent my feedback to GR

Hi Roy, the feedback button is still there. But it's moved to the right hand side of the page, near the clipboard and printer icons.
Kind regards,
Estelle

Hi Roy,

I spotted that one myself earlier - great minds! I am spending much of my day testing the tree and I have asked for this text to be re-added.

Kind regards,

Estelle

I was also wondering if it would it be beneficial to add what browser members are using when sending feedback?

I never thought of that Ken but think that it comes back to whether the back ground is to bright?

It would be interesting to see what others think both the older and younger eyes?
My eye sight is not good so i probably see things in a different light

Roy

Ken, You have deleted your valid comment?

SuffolkVera Report 25 Jul 2012 15:27

Roy,
I've had the odd moan or two but it is good to see someone looking on the positive side for a change. Here's a copy of the feedback I sent to GR today.

"I have just looked at the new design on the tree. It looks clean but a bit “wishy-washy” and I am not sure how long I would be able to look at it without my eyes aching. Would it be possible to have a different colour (either box or text) for male and female relatives? I would also like to be able to scroll up and down the page using the scroll wheel on the mouse. I know there are up/down arrows etc. on the page and I can also grab and drag the page to move it but I find scrolling quicker.

I don’t use my tree much so can’t comment on all the features but I have tried adding relatives and editing others etc. to see how it works and have had no problems at all. Everything worked fine for me. I like the fact that the tree now gives relationships.

On the message boards, as I have said before, I like the fact that you can highlight a particular thread but on many sites clicking on something highlighted gets you in to that particular topic. Maybe I was being particularly slow witted today but it took me a moment or two to realise that this wasn’t sufficient and I had to click on the topic title. Perhaps a general instruction at the beginning of the boards on the lines of “To enter a thread click on topic heading” might be useful.

Overall I think the site is gradually improving and most of the changes are for the better."

Sorry Porkie, I'll reinstate it. I decided to send it to feedback.

On the tree the round red item with the number of matches in is a bit too prominent for my liking. Perhaps a softer orange would be more in keeping with the rest of the items.

PS I can't get suggestions board from the beta site. Anyone else find that? I can read individual suggestion threads via My Threads though.

Porkie_Pie Report 25 Jul 2012 15:52

Vera, We all have a moan now and then but moaning achieves nothing, getting involved with constructive comments is the only way to help the team to improve the site,

I too had problems with viewing the site particularly the community boards i had to strain my eyes to read the board and it gave me a head ache but using the feedback to highlight this GR have changed the font so it's not a problem for me personally now although their is room for improvement in that area and suggestions are welcome

I think that a different colour for male and female would also have it's merits When i first started my tree i used a free basic tree that used a different colour for male and females and found it helpful so i will include that in my next lot of feedback to GR

Andysmum Report 25 Jul 2012 16:02

I quite like the new tree, but the background is still too bright. There should be more contrast between the background and font colours. I have passed this info to GR.

Also, has anyone else noticed how small the font on the tree headings is?? I can hardly see it!! I can enlarge the tree boxes using Zoom, but this does not affect the headings.

I also agree with Vera, that different coloured boxes is a good idea - perhaps they would be easier to read if the background was pink or blue.

Porkie_Pie Report 25 Jul 2012 16:04

Ken, I don't have a problem getting onto the suggestions board I am on the Beta at the moment,

When i posted this thread my intention was for feedback to be sent to GR and then for members to post comments and thoughts about their experience and input to the beta site and the new tree in order to possibly help members and GR to improve the site

Porkie_Pie Report 25 Jul 2012 16:40

Andysmum, The small font on the tree heading?

I noted that the whole header of that page was to large but now GR decluttered the header part of the page and it now seems fine but the only part of the header i find the font to small is the link for "View other trees" but i can live with it as it is although slightly larger may be best for most users

Patricia Report 25 Jul 2012 17:13

Good idea Roy,

I have tested Beta out side by side with the current one, so far I prefer it. I have sent feedback to GR already but the main points are below, I did mention a couple of other things that I find personally annoying but these have already been mentioned on other threads.

When you have the 2 sites open on a large monitor you can really do a decent comparison, on doing that I can't see any difference in size of font, which some have mentioned, the font on the beta site is now darker so thats better.

I have already said on other threads I do not see this bright white others are complaining of, and this is not just on one laptop/pc, it is on every one I have tried so far [6], the only tiome I got a bright screen was after my friend at work had used my work pc, he has the brightness on 100%, I have it about 50%. Could t his be the problem for some?

I'm in my mid 50's, wear glasses, and am intolerant with bright lights, I have been known to wear sunglasses in winter! And I always have the visor in the car down!!! My OH who is colour blind also says the beta site is easier for him to look at.

Patricia

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 25 Jul 2012 19:16

Patricia, I only have the problem with the bright screen whilst on the community boards

The problem with members having to change their settings is that laptops and desk top PC's are different with a desk top PC you can change the brightness and the contrast in conjunction with each other to suit your needs but i think laptops only have the option of adjusting the brightness,

I find that if i adjust the brightness then it also reduced the visibility of the text,

I also find that putting the option to both " import and export " your Gedcom from the Family Tree tab is an improvement

The site does look better now than when it was first launched as a beta so clearly a sign that GR are listening and implementing changes where possible,

I agree strongly with the Import and Export GEDCOM change. I always felt uneasy about clicking on Import to get the export option.
