Hi Kath,

Thanks for the reply. Just realised it also says (difficult to read) wife of Samuel Thomas Sherratt otherwise Burton colliery stone miner.

So they were definitely using the Surname Burton. Her daughter Lucy Elizabeth Atkinson was the informant on the cert. I hadn't been able to find a marriage for her, but there is one for a Lucy Burton to an Atkinson.

Thanks again for your help,

Annette

It means that Burton is another surname that people knew her by. She could possibly have lived with a Mr. Burton and used his surname for a time or could have used a different surname for some other reason.

I received a death certificate today for my GGgrandmother. Under the Name and Surname it says 'Louisa Elizabeth Sherratt otherwise Burton' .

Is 'otherwise' used instead of 'formerly' and then maiden name?
Only I know her maiden name was Smith and this family were forever changing there names around, so wouldn't surprise me if they were going around with the surname of Burton. They were originally from Burton on Trent.
