Who had his money

You are correct Kathleen

If the estate required a legal document to deal with it (the monetary size , there was property or shares, a business etc) then you either need a Grant of Probate (will exists) or Grant of Letters of Adminstration (no will, or will not valid in legal sense)

even if you dont write a will someone may need to be given the authority to deal with your estate.

I disagree Reggie - even if someone hasn't left a Will a relative (or other person) can apply for Letters of Administration so that they can administer the estate. The Letters of Administration gives them proof to show banks, building societies etc. that they are entitled to sort out the estate.

If he hadn't left a Will there would be no record of its going to administration

Have you found his name on the Probate records on Ancestry?

If so use the details from that and go to the website that Roy has given to find out how to order the grant/will.

The cost is £6 for the first copy and £1 for each extra copy you order.

Thank you so very much, but does bring on another question of how do I find out if he did leave a will or the details of the administration

Sorry to be a pain

It just means that he was responsible for Administration of the deceased Estates

It doesn't mean he left everything to his son - just that his son was granted letters of administration, so that he could deal with administering the Will. You would have to buy the Will (if there was one) to see who he left his money to.

I was granted Letters of Administration when my mother died but her Will left an equal share of her estate to all five of her children.

My GG Grandfather died in 1907 and it says Administation to his son does that mean he had left all his money to his son as his wife was still alive or if I got his will would it tell me more

Thanks

Pam
