I assume the £130 would not include property?

Pam Report 4 Jul 2012 09:29

For £6 you can apply for a copy of the Will and Probate.

Use this website:

http://www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/courts-and-tribunals/courts/probate/family-history.htm

It takes about 3 weeks to arrive.

Thats fascinating , thanks. How comprehensive are the wills and probate? are the scanned images of the original documents?

Also is there a website where it is possible to see all the owners of a property? There is a manor house in Cornwall called Molesworth manor and it would be interesting to see if there is a connection.
Many thanks everyone !

The Wills and Probate are scanned copies of the original 'copies', be they hand written or typed.

You wouldn't get to see the original handwriting, rather a transcripiton made at the time saying "I hereby certify that this to be a correct copy."

They are as comprehensive as the deceased wanted them to be. It might be a simply one where everything left after debts and expenses is given to the surviving spouse, to something were individual named heirs (with their relationships, if appropriate) are bequested the 'The picture of the of lady which hangs in the Parlour' or various other objects!

Molesworth Manor appears to be a B&B nr Padstow. They have a website for bookings

http://www.molesworthmanor.co.uk/

If you were to contact them, they may know the history of the previous occupants.
Failing that, you could try Padstow Tourist Information Centre
http://www.padstowlive.com/
or Padstow Library
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/index.aspx?page=24096

The latter, if they can't help, may point you in the direction of the Cornwall Archives.

You could try Cornwall-opc (on line parish clerks) volunteers who may have other suggestions for information.

About Molesworth Manor
Molesworth Manor is a licensed guesthouse in a former rectory dating from the early 17th Century. It is situated in an attractive garden, 2 miles from the pretty fishing port of Padstow, and provides comfortable relaxed accommodation with a warm and friendly atmosphere. It has been awarded four diamonds by the English Tourism Council and is featured in the the Michelin Guide, the Good Hotel Guide and Alistair Sawdays British Bed & Breakfast Guide.

Have you read back through the peerage stuff I found you the link for? Was the Manor mentioned in it?

How about e-mailing the owners of the Manor directly?

You could contact the local history society. If you Google 'Padstow history' there are a lot of pages for you to look at including possible books for sale.

http://www.bodminmoor.co.uk/blislandboundarystones/pdfdialup/Chapter11.pdf

The Molesworths are mentioned on page 61.

If you do indeed link into them, you have a lot of history waiting for you. We should all get info like this on our family ;-)

Please keep us updated on what you find.

Martin Report 7 Jul 2012 11:05

I am so grateful to all who have helped with this, I have been back through the peerage info and looked at the Wikipedia link. There are many interesting avenues to explore . The st Aubyn family own st michaels mount in Cornwall which I have visited several times without any idea that there was a family connection .

For those of us who haven't been involved in the search, which James Wade are you refering to? YOB and POB?

If the records survive, they would be on Ancestry. As you probably know, a large %age of WW1 records were destroyed in WW2 bombing.

It was James Molesworth Wade , who served with Lawence of Arabia I was originally interested in as he married my ancestor Gwendolen Carter. I also believe his father was James Herne Wade , both were lt. Col. , the first in Royal Engineers, second in 90th light infantry .
I have not researched much military history before so not sure of the best places to look. Ancestry does have quite a few records for James Wade but I just wanted to be sure I had the right man .

As he was an officer he wouldn't have a number. There are no Army officers records online, although you can get a basic outline of his career from the London Gazette.

There are a number of officers files for WW1 for a J Wade at the National Archives (the index often doesn't give full initials and regiment) so it would be a question of looking at them all or by looking at the fuller index on the documentsonline website (digital microfilm which can be downloaded) to identify the correct reference. If he stayed in the Army after 1922 his record would still be wth the MOD.

PM me if you need more help!

Martin Report 9 Jul 2012 20:27

Ahh, I see thanks,
I wasnt aware that officers didnt have numbers. That would explain why I couldnt find much info on them :-)

I will have a look on the NA site and documentsonline

Looks as though James Herne Wade was in the habit of purchasing military promotions.

From London Gazette Feb 1849

War Office - Feb 2nd

90th Regiment Foot - James Herne Wade to be Ensign, by purchase, vice Eager.
