Debbie Report 7 Aug 2012 21:31

Hi Stephen. I am the great great granddaughter of George Roworth and Rosa Tout (my great grandmother was Helena Annie Mary or Elen Roworth). I have George's military records in India (if you would like them, let me know, but it's likely you already have them). I didn't even know that George and Rosa had any other children! You must be descended from one of their sons. Do you have any photos of the Roworth line? Do you know anything about Nathan, George's dad? I think George had a brother Nathan as well. Any thoughts, suggestions gratefully received. Debbie Marshall (nee Horne) Canada

Does anyone know why, when I have a standard membership for GR I need to buy extra credits to view a Census?

If someone is able, could they look at the following 1901 Census entry, I'm trying to find out who lived there with him.

Hi Folks,

Just like to thank everyone, once again for their advice, and in particular Jonesey and JustJill for giving up some of their time to look for my family. I've been able to make a lot of progress with my tree and discovered lots of things I didn't know about my family. :-)

Ivy

Ivy Report 23 Jun 2012 10:41

Thanks Ken - I did wonder whether it might be a child's death.

Would this be the death of his first wife?

Ellen Raworth Oct-Nov-Dec 1839 Radford Nottinghamshire

(I can't spot another marriage, though, so perhaps not?)

Must dash.

Looking on familysearch for Nathan Roworth, the search engine offers two born in Lenton, in 1801 and 1805. Since the parents are identical, I wonder if the elder one died as an infant?

Looking for deaths of Nat* *w*rth in the Radford registration district, there is a death listed, but in 1841, which seems a bit too soon to fit well with this family.

I've tried to look for George's siblings after 1851; his younger brother Nathan can be seen, and it looks as if William married a Sarah and moved into central Nottingham, while Elizabeth is with William Farrand, hosting a brother and a niece, but George is not with any of these. I've not spotted Mary or Ann as yet.

This looks a reasonable fit in 1841 for the 1851 census found by Jonesey:

Name: Mary Haworth
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Gender: Female
Where born: Nottinghamshire, England

Civil parish: Lenton
Hundred: Broxtow (South Division)
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Radford
Sub-registration district: Lenton

Nathan Haworth 35 (so aged 35-39 and born 1802-1806?), engineer

William Haworth 8
Ann Haworth 6

- and Nathan fits approximately to the Nathaniel searched for?

Jonesey Report 22 Jun 2012 13:09

Stephen,

We all make mistakes. It now makes more sense as I could see something was not correct. Here is some more info and records for you to digest.

The marriage that you found I presume is this one:

Marriages Sep 1877
ROURETH George Southampton 2c 22
Tout Rosa Matilda E Southampton 2c 22

Her full name as registered at her birth was Rose Matilda Elizabeth Tout:

Name: Rose Matilda Elizabeth Tout
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1853
Registration district: Alverstoke
Inferred County: Hampshire
Volume: 2b
Page: 383

That lady remarried as Rosa Matilda E Rowarth in Southampton in 1886 to Thomas John Randall:

Name: Rosa Matilda E Rowaeth (Mistranscribed actually Rowarth on orig)
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1886
Registration district: Southampton
Inferred County: Hampshire
Volume Number: 2c
Page Number: 34

That would tie up to this death in Nottingham in 1884. The age at death would equate to an 1843 birth:

Deaths Sep 1884
Roworth George 41 Nottingham 7b 237

Here She is in 1891:

Name: Rosa Randall
Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1854
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Gosport, Hampshire, England
Civil parish: Walcot

It looks as though she and George had a daughter Elizabeth born in Nottingham in 1882:

Name: Elizabeth Howorth (Roworth on original)

For some reason my brain was a little slow and I put my Gt-Grandfathers year of birth as 1854, when I'm sure it is 1843 :-D sorry folks.

Which explains how I came to confuse Jonesey above!

Jonesey,

I'm happy that I've got the right George and Rosa, Rose, Rosina, I've since found the marriage date of 1877. I now have a first name for his Father, Nathaniel and I'm estimating a DOB for him as c 1812, (wet finger in the air), I need to look through what you've found, but the wife is nagging me to go shopping, can I PM you later?

Thanks though, I'm very grateful for your help,

Steve

Stephen,

Rosa Tout also appears in the 1871 census as Rosina:

Name: Rosina Tout
Age: 19

The age for George Roworth in the 1881 census does not equate to someone born in 1854.

1881:

Could it possibly be that the birth certificate you have is for a different George Roworth. Remember that although birth registration began in England in 1837 it was not until 1874 that registration became compulsory. A lot of births went unregistered.

JustDinosaurJill Report 22 Jun 2012 11:34

This came to me in a pm yesterday. Posted onto here instead after message to Stephen.J

My Great-Grandfather was George Roworth, born in 1854 in Lenton, Notts. He appears in the 1881 Census and lives at 85 Lion Street, Nottingham. I know this is accurate because I have a birth certificate for my Grand-Father with this information in. He then disappears and does not show up in any Census earlier or later. I have come across a family tree with a William Roworth, born in 1855 at Lenton, Notts and have emailed the owner for more info as it is too much of a coincidence.

My Great-Grandmother is Rosa nee Tout who appears in the 1861 Census and the 1881 Census, (named Rose), but then disappears. Again I have come across another tree with her in it and I have emailed the owner for further information.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

I have searched the Census returns in the way suggested by some other members, but to no avail.

Stephen,

The best site for finding such things during the period 1837~1950 is this one:

It is free.
