Hi Ann
thank you for that
but on mine the drop down box displays sort by relevance, if i change it to category I can get back into the old search.
best wishes

Hi Maddie,
I originally posted a response to this, and guess what?
I now have the same search screen that you have.
It is really really annoying and I am not quite sure how to rectify it either.
I can still ultimitely find what I am looking for, but it is a very a long winded process.

Every now and then, for no reason, I get logged out of Anc and asked to subscibe. My sub does not expire until the end of this year!
It takes ages, but I can eventually get logged back in, only to be thrown out again.
Anc said the prob is caused by cookies... IT is not!
I unblock all cookies, log back in to Anc and as soon as I locate the record... I get kicked out again.

After several attempts to re log in this morning, I find that I now have that stupid search page that you originally posted about
I also logged on via a 2nd PC and have exactly the same problems.

BTW
when emailing ANC why do they insist on responding with a link?
I would not be emailing them if I hadn't already referred to it.

EDIT
Whoops. Apologies for my long winded rant, I just worked out how to get my original looking screen back!
Click on search records
Search screen has defaulted to :Sort by Category
There is a wee drop menu...
Chose the other option: Sort by Relevance
And my original search sreen has now returned

On a similar note, does anyone know if the "Recently Added" list that used to be on the front page is still lurking around somewhere?
It was useful for discovering when Ancestry had snuck in an update or new records before they updated the banner, as this oten takes days (and often doesn't happen for updated recordsets).

I tried that last year - no joy

Their idea of the 'old' search is the one currently on the site

Maddie

Maddie Report 15 Jun 2012 11:19

thank you for all your replies, think i will e-mail ancestry and see if they can sort it

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Jun 2012 09:37

Unfortunately, Maddie, the current 'old search' is not the one with which you are familiar

The fact that you had an internet problem means that you have lost that one -permanently

I couldn't get back to it either after I had an internet 'outage'.

It's called 'progress'!

If I select Search - Search all records from the main banner bar, and "go to new search" is showing, then I'm in the old style search.
I think you need to check the "exact matches only" box at top left of search screen.

Maddie

If you click search then click search all records .when you do that you will see

At the right of the screen there is a message go to old search click that and it will put you back to old type searches

hi Jane
just want to get back to the original way of searching rather than ancestry telling me what they think.
And things do happen in threes
Found I could not log on to internet banking
Rang the bank, its down to firefox so they are going to help me sort that tomorrow.
Think I will go back to the abacus and manual typewriter
lol

Maddie

Have you checked to make sure that "Exact Matches only" is ticked? I found that my tick had disappeared once and it drove me round the bend trying to work out what had happened.

Maddie Report 14 Jun 2012 14:21

I know, thats so long winded, I just wondered where the old search method has gone, it was so much easier and gave you the option of scrolling through the record if there was a mispelling or something.
Guess its not my week, after losing genes and messing around to get back, now this.
I hope its not happening in threes
regards

Hi Ann

this is what i got when searching for issac ogden 1741

Maddie,

Which search icon are you clicking?
There are two options
SEARCH on top bar or smaller one SEARCH RECORDS

The large one on the top bar is for searching anyone.... ie you need to enter the details of the person in question

By clicking new search, it simply means that you are resetting your original search and intend to start a new one.

However , you can also search records for an individual whilst they are on your screen.
To search from here.... click on the smaller "search records" icon which sits under the person's name and this will allow you to filter your searches on that person only.

Is this what you mean?

EDIT:
To use the smaller search icon, you would of course need to have a tree held on ancestry to search from!

hi Tenerife
yes it does, did that and still brought up a list of so called matches.
If i cllick on old search the same silly list of matches also appears
I really am at a loss
whats even worse is if I enter a new ancestor and then clck on search historical records a long list of possible matches comes up, most being totally irrelevant

If the page states "go to new search" then you are in "old search".

Under the bar across the top that starts with Home and ends with Shop does it not say, on the right, white background Go To New Search. If so click on it and see what happens
