The prohibition era in the USA was between 1920 and 1933. How do those dates tally with the age at the time of the person that the family story relates to?

Legislation enacted by the United States Congress in 1891 gave a time limit of one year after an alien entered the country for the individual to be deported. This was not amended until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. Under those circumstances unless the individual who was found guilty of prohibition crimes could not have been deported unless they had been in the USA for less than 12 months before conviction.

Dear All. Thank you for the info.

One member requests more information..

There is a family story ( not confirmed ) that one of my grandmothers brothers went to the U S A ( or Canada ) got involved in the PROHIBITION alco running, they say was involved in gun-fight with another gang, got caught, was sent back to England.
As I say I cannot confirm this, story I was told as a child, no-one I know to talk of it now, all dead.
Name he used was supposed to have been an alias ?
His name far as I know, Joseph Rees.
It was they say recorded in the newspaper, where, which one ?

So you see, not much to go on.

But, THANK YOU ANY-WAY dopeydoc

The 1880 US census has several David Rees born in Wales of a fairly similar age.

If Dopeydoc gives more info on what they're trying to confirm then perhaps we can find the correct records.

NB - The Stedmans they're boarding with - all except the youngest 2 were born in Wales, so maybe they knew them back there - they might even be rellies.
