A long time ago, someone posted a method to solve the following problem.
You go to look for a marriage on Ancestry, for a relly in 1861, in Doncaster. There are two females and one male.
I looked on subsequent cenusii, 1871 and 1881, and found the female that the male married. So, how do I find the name of the man that my relly married,

It is fairly easy, you need FreeBMD

The essential information to be aware of is that there were always an even number of people for any given page reference xx nnn - usually 4 but it can be 2,4,6,8. By entering the reference, place and date for the marriage and NO NAME you get all the people on that page. Working in conjunction with the census you can work things out by inference.

Sometimes FreeBMD/Ay has an odd number of people. This is usually due to trans errors - people entered twice or not at all. In that case have a look at the image scan.

The Ay version of FreeBMD is NOT identical to the web version and tends to be more complete. Sometimes the image scans are also different. Neither version is 100% accurate even up to 1900. However the scans are fairly complete but time consuming.

If you posted actual names I am sure you would get a fix in no time.

Look at all marriages that took place in that quarter in Doncaster at www,freebmd.org.uk Look for a male where the reference number is either incomplete or out of sequence. Hopefully that will leave you with possibilities that enable you to discover the answer.

Those are the sort of anomalies that you need to look for and then follow up in the next available census records or even death records.

On FreeBMD, try checking the Spectacles icon and then view the scan of each of the three names to see if there is an error in the transcription.

If that does not solve the problem then you could try searching Volume for any entry that is out of place or contains UCF (Unrecogisable Character Format). The District Name will show in Italics if Volume Page combination does not match District.

If no joy there, try a search on the Page Number. Again, you are looking for any entry in Italics. It is all too easy when transcribing to select the wrong District from the "picklist" but the chances are that such entry will not match the expected Page Range for that District.

If that does not work, try looking at the Page numbers around the one you are looking for to see if an odd number of entries appear.
A 5 can often look like an 8. 6 can often be mistaken for 0 - Depending on the quality on the the original scan
