Can anyone identify the badge that I have posted on Photos and Videos. Found in my mum's box of stuff! Could be anything from Brownie Badge to WW2. Mum was in ATS and dad in Royal Artillery

Yes, of course. It is the scales and sword of justice. The best known representation of this is on the roof of the Old Bailey Central Court of Justice in London. The image seems to be that of a sampler. It was probably made by somebody with an officer of the law in the family.

Rollo, thanks I did wonder if it was the scales of Justice. The image doesn't give the size but it is only about 2" X 2" and looks as if it was unpicked from something such as a sleeve.

No idea of any officer of the law, my dad was a butcher, then a Gunner in WW2 and then a clerk.

2 x 2 in... then it was a sleeve patch denoting the unit. These were fairly informal but poorly documented. You can get yr father's army records from the MoD and that will tell you which unit he was with. Various themes based on meting out justice to the Wehrmacht were quite popular. Was he in the Tigers or the RA/RFA/RHA ?

Thanks Rollo, when my brother finds dad's death cert I am going to send for his record, I have his service number as it is on my birth certificate.

He was in the Royal Artillery and I know he was in France and Belgium

The sword and scales of the seventh sign of the Zodiac. 7th A.A. Division HQ was located at Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and the Division covered the North-Eastern Counties.

Tha above badge is a blue background with red as per your photograph, no idea if there is a connection though Jennifer!

Ann thanks for that, interesting. My mum came from Cumberland and was up there when she joined the ATS.
Another family mystery to be solved.

Ann, you are right, I have been on the Imperial war Museum site and found an exact copy of the badge. So I am thinking they must have belonged to my mum.

Oh Crikey that was a long shot! I thought perhaps that it was a "common" ensignia given to different groups.
