My grandfather was born in Merthyr and staff at the local archive (above the library in Castle St.) were most helpful. From about the mid 1800's all burials in the area were done at Cefn Coed, a huge cemetery about 5 miles north of Merthyr. Part of this cemetery is unconsecrated ground to comply with the beliefs of some of the non-conformist churches. I had always associated unconsecrated ground with some form of wrong-doing, so had a bit of a shock when told that my great grandfather was in that part of the cemetery!! He died in 1886, so Cefn Coed was well established by then. |
