Can anyone help me figure out where exactly this is? One of my ancestors has this listed as his place of birth on 4 censuses but I can't locate it! Thanks,
Kate

Yeah thats the one he's also listed in a census as being born in Stanton Lacy - I'm rather confused!

Stanton Lacy is a very specific name. It is a small village and civil parish located in Shropshire about 3 miles from Ludlow, which is where James Russell was living in 1851.
As James was a farm labourer I would not have imagined that he would have travelled too far from the area in which he was born. I wonder whether the name Letwich or Letage perhaps was the name of the farm or premises in which he was born rather than the name of a village.
Below is what may well be his marriage. Details from the certificate may help to identify his father/family in the 1841 census.

Geographically, this might be a possibilty:
LEDWYCHE, a river rising under Titterstoneclee, in county Salop, and joining the Teme near Tenbury. On its bank is a hamlet of the same name, about 1 mile E. of Ludlow (see genuki at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/Miscellaneous/index.html )
Putting nothing but either Letwich or Lettage into the census search comes up with incredibly few hits. Letwich is a surname; and there are several references to Letwich in Cheshire; one of these was living at Leftwich in Cheshire, so these can be ruled out.
I was hopeful on finding an 1881 entry for Thomas and Ann Bebb (from Radnorshire and Herefordshire), living in Burford in Shropshire; their address was Letwich bridge, but this area is much closer to Tenbury Wells than to Ludlow, and as Jonesey says, he appears to be a Ludlow local lad...
Looking at the current Ordnance Survey map, about two or three miles to the north east of Ludlow, there is a hamlet named Upper Ledwyche, just off the B4364. It is on the Ledwyche Brook, which runs just to the north of the B4364, before turning south through Middleton and carrying on in a south south westerly direction. Just a mile or two due east of Ludlow, the brook turns to a south south easterly direction and at this point Lower Ledwyche is to the east of the brook. Following the brook, it forms an easterly loop a little to the south west of Caynham and then forms part of the boundary between Shropshire and Herefordshire until it meets the A456 at Ledwich Bridge.
It might be worth looking for baptisms for either Upper Ledwyche or Lower Ledwyche?
Using the new familysearch site, I only came up with two baptisms in Shropshire between 1818 and 1828 for James Russell, both of which seem too far north - one in Onibury (although that is where his wife was born) and one in Culmington (which is only about two miles north of Stanton Lacy).
|
The Onibury baptism can perhaps be ruled out since there is this entry in the 1871 census:
James Russell (spouse Clara) born abt 1823 Ombury, Herefordshire, England living at Knighton, Radnorshire
whereas this appears to be the entry for your James Russell in 1871:
James Russell (spouse Sarah) born abt 1820 Stanton Lacy, Shropshire, England living at Marlow, Herefordshire
|
There is another point in favour of the Culmington baptism:
name: James Russell gender: Male baptism/christening date: 23 Dec 1821 baptism/christening place: Culmington, Shropshire, England father's name: Samuel Russell mother's name: Anne indexing project (batch) number: I03807-7 system origin: England-EASy source film number: 1657547
James and Sarah called their first son James and their second son Samuel.
With a bit of luck, the marriage certificate might confirm that his father's name is Samuel?
(Especially since the tree at the link posted by Andrew above states that he is the son of Samuel... I should have looked at that sooner...)
