Hi, I wonder if anyone can explain please how a child is traveling by herself, I came across the following.

Hilda Greenwood age 6years travelling from Liverpool to Philadelphia on the S S Haverford on June 22nd 1908, on the opposite page it says "Board of special enquiries"
Her name is number 7 on the list of passengers, I cannot find any of her parents with her at the time, although they did go over seperatley but can only find her father travelling.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be they were from a childrens home. Thousands of young children were sent to Canada at this time. Many were told that their parents had died, which wasn't always true.

Her passenger list says she's going to join her father, Mr. Greenwood, 4251 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia.

Hint: Take note of line number on passenger list and go to next page to get extra info.

Hi Andy, she wasnt from a childrens home I have found her parents in Yorkshire and then again in the 1920 census for Pennsylvania I just wondered why she is travelling alone at the age of 6

Hi Margee, I took a look on the next page and find that her travelling alone was passed by a board of enquiry and wondered why, I cannot see any other info that explains this, I will have to delve into this a bit deeper.

Could it be that Hilda was not well at the time and had to stay behind with her grandparents and emigrate later? But surely she would not be sent on her own? Although I don't see anyone on the passenger list with her who's going to the same address.

it could be that she was entrusted to a female passenger, and that her father met the ship in Boston.

Why is travelling on your own so hard to believe.
In the 1960's, from the age of 8, my wife used to travel between Nigeria and boarding school in England. She always travelled on her own and was met by family at each end.

Well, maybe I'm an overprotective mother but I wouldn't dream of sending a 6 year old child on a trans-Atlantic voyage unaccompanied. I remember the voyage at age 8 being frightening and I was with parents.

could she have been accompanied by a nurse, or someone with a different name???
