Divorce was not easy until at least the 1930s.

It was extremely expensive, and very difficult to prove the adultery that was one of the very few reasons for divorce.


Most people simply could not afford it ............. so they separated, and one or both then married at a later date, bigamously. Or lived common-law with a second spouse.


All was well unless they were found out.




It is one of the reasons why you should always take the time to

a) check for a first wife or husband after you think they might be dead, and

b) look for a second marriage years after the couple first appear!

I never knew my Grandfather- but - from what i can gather he was'nt very nice. But still managed to produce 1 child from legal wife, and 11 from my Nan!!! There's only 1 child left who lives in America, but i'm not going to tell her especially as she 85!!!!
He was very lucky not to be caught!

I have just found one,he got 3 months imp for his offence and then remarried 3 years later, as he is not a relation i don,t think i want to go there. left my relation with two illegitimate kids.
don't know how he got caught though

Bigamy was taken very seriously. Jail sentence if found out.

I have been looking for ages for just a hint of scandal!
My Grandfather stated on his marriage cert in 1926 to my Gran he was a "widower". His 1st wife died in 1954 aged 81 !
Would he have been punished for being a bigamist ? or did they turn ablind eye in those days?
