Can someone tell me how I can find births from before 1827?
I have a Robert Hildred, someone very kindly found his christening in 1826, which states his Mother's name as Sarah, but no info on the father, place of birth Wainfleet, Lincolnshire

You wont find his birth because no registration of births took place before 1837. Baptisms sometimes had the date of birth on the the parish record but it depended on how the vicar liked to record things

Would seem from what you say that he was illegitimate, Some vicars too insisted the mum named the father and again they would record the alleged fathers name . Without any info on the baptism then its a dead end to know who the dad was

so he had married by 1851 does he give a fathers name on the cert? you would need to be aware though that sometimes a fathers name was made up to save face with the spouses family

Was Robert in fact Hildred and his mum married martin Jessop. Its the right area

Thanks once again for the info Shirley, Hope the PM explained my inexperiance.

I'm now trying to trace the baptism records for Sarah Hildred, who I believe was born around 1801, quite possibly in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire

along with Elizabeth Hildred, abt 1805 - 1806 in Wainfleet.

It may come to light they are sisters, or sisters in law or something
