Does anyone know if an 18 year old woman would have needed parental permission to marry at age 18 in 1955 ?

Yes she would have needed permission as she was under 21. I needed my parent's permission in 1960

My question relates specifically to Wales

Ok so in that case if the person in question was 18 and the spouse 27 it would not be suprising to find on the marriage cert

a) that is was a registry office wedding
b) none of the witnesses appear to be relatives
c) the bride's father's christian name doesn't tie up with the one I was expecting it to be and he was stated as 'deceased'

ie if you have a registry office wedding and lie that your father is deceased you can't be asked to get his permission?

I just asked my mum and she needed permission, but cannot remember how she obtained it. Her father did'nt go to the wedding but her mother did.
Maybe the permission was given when the banns were read?

I think Wales was the same as England then.

I am not sure that anyone under 18 would just be able to get married even if the father is noted as deceased. What about the Mother? And I vaguely remember the court having to giver permission.

She would have been over 18 but under 19 at the time, but guess then the age of majority was 21 .

I am trying to figure this out for a friend but can't post details as the people concered are still alive.

The fact that it does not tie up doesn't surprise me, just wanted to check the legalities

It didnt have to be a parental consent,,,,,,,as a ward of guardian could sign or applied to a court if it was proved there was grounds to override parental consent.

ie he was in prison or overseas?or was an enstranged parent.

16 was the legal youngest age with consent in 1955,,,as applies now.

When I have been transcribing marriage records, I have come across the phrase 'with consent of friends' . Not sure if the bride or groom were under age though.

A Birth Certificate may have been needed as proof of age,?

is there a possibilty,that the B/C fathers name and that on M/C were not the same person?

I married in 1957 aged 20 and dad had to sign a form giving his permission for me to marry.

i married in 1980 and im sure my parents had to give permission..not sure if things have changed much.x

Its 18 now and no parents permission is needed but proof of age is.
