Could those with more experience possibly suggest some alternative transcriptions for:

Siggs

and

Ohren

Ta :-)

S - could be L or even T

g could be y

Ohren - obrien

The list is endless really as it depends on the handwriting

I haven't got more experience but I don't suppose that there's any harm in guessing.

Sometimes F looks like S (depending on the handwriting) so if you were to reverse that - possibly Figgs???

Liggs on another site has been used especially in the Haverhill,Suffolk area but they also got that as Essex?

I'm trying to establish facts about Charles Matthew Siggs 1808-1855 and Margaret Ohren c1821-1889. Very hard to find info about the early part of their lives ! I'm thinking there might be some bad transcriptions?

I have a whole thread about C M Siggs on find ancestors board.

Have you looked on this site or googles the relevant surnames?

I wonder if Ohren could have Orrin as an alternative, I know that is a name that occurs in Essex.

I'll check that. I've looked at Aveley parish records for the period and Ohren doesn't come up. Likewise I've done a search of St.Dunstan, Stepney and very little comes up. They are the birthplaces of both.

I input Margaret Ohren into FreeBMD and asked for phonetic search of surnames. These came up.

Oram, Orwin, Orme, O'Heron, Orren, Orham, O'Hearne, O'Rein,

Something I learned years ago was to think of the area someone might come from, think of how they spoke ie accent and try saying the surname with that accent.

have you got the marriage Transcript ? as I found a marriage 3 Nov 1829 to Elizabeth Ann Reed in Saint Martin in the Fields ..........

Found Elizabeth Ann Reed on the familysearch site batch number C037213 .Saint martin in the Fields, Westminster father John Read mother Jane .wonder if Matthew is from the same parish..........a look on the batch number may turn uo something ?

oh she was born 24 Jan 1808 and Christened on 14 Feb
