when I fought it last year ................ I had renewed before the due date, not to mention the 4 week grace period after the due date, but GR charged it in $ to my credit card.

Then they offered to charge me in £ sterling if I would change my residency to the UK .................... but they didn't tell me that they would refund the $US before charging in £

the dickering had taken so long that it was now abut 4 days past the due date, and I ended up being a Free member for about 3 days

However, they also say you have 4 weeks AFTER the due date during which you can renew without losing loyalty, etc.

I fought it on the basis that it was their fault that the sub wasn't officially paid until 2 days after the due date of June 5, ............... plus the fact that it was well within the 4 week grace period

....... they finally agreed that it was THEIR fault.

but I will be watching very carefully this year!

Just to add my little bit.

I've just been charged this week $A15.96 for 6 months.

I have been a member since June 2003 and was continuous payment. However in 2007 I was overseas when my subs came due and my credit card details had changed so GR couldn't renew. I missed the deadline by 2 days!!! I fought for reinstatement (obviously not hard enough, Sylvia) but they were adamant, so I thought about $30-$40 isn't too much to ask for 12 months so resigned myself to paying every 6 months. At the moment it works in my favour as the Aussie Dollar is good against GBP.

Just want to put this here to return to another time possibly in more confusion than ever :-S

"My Subscription details

Oh, I see, I think; perhaps I paid early on the 6th, when I used a new card.

Ann

That was what I suggested on another thread ............... because April was when I joined both GR and FriendsReunited, but my renewal has been in June for several years.

But others told me that we'd only ever been give a week or so free.

Like you, I have this memory of some major problems having resulted in all of us being given a month or more, sometime before the sale to ITV.

I wonder when they changed me back to April though?? :-S :-S :-S

I'm certain it said June last weekend :-)

AnninGlos Report 16 Feb 2012 15:07

Sylvia, I can't remember clearly but some time in the distant past before Genes Connected was sold I vaguely remember that we got a month or so free because of some problem or other. I am almost sure I joined in February 2003 but my renewal date is now April.

they HAVE just done an update .........................................................

PriscillaEmilywasMoonbeam

PriscillaEmilywasMoonbeam Report 16 Feb 2012 07:17

My membership is showing as starting April 2004 but I didn't join Genes until 2008 which was when I started doing my Family Tree. Before that I was a member of Friends Reunited so I'm wondering if that is the date they are using. Also it does not coincide with when my sub is due.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Feb 2012 05:39

On very interesting thing that I have just noticed .......

I joined in April 2004, but for several years my subscription renewal has been in June, and that is what has been showing under my avatar since we got them last year.

Last week, I mentioned that fact on another thread, and wondered how we had got 2 free months ...................................

today, my membership is showing as having begun in April 2004.

:-S :-S :-S :-S

I am NOT going daft, I am NOT going daft!!!!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Feb 2012 05:35

I can understand!

I did fight it last year ................ but as a result of my fight, they refunded the US charge, and then reduced me to a Free member because according to them I had not renewed in time

so that was another fight!

they did finally refund everything, including the 20% discount the had offered.

I'm just waiting to see what will happen next month!

Sylvia

Luckily there is not too much difference between the Canadian and U.S. dollar at the moment but I still feel I have been gypped out of my 20% discount.

I've changed my residence to U.K. so I'll be prepared for the next sub if I am still around.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Feb 2012 03:40

That is what happened to me last June ................. except what they charged to my credit card was $14.49 US for 12 months

The email from GR saying my sub was due for renewal quoted £9.95 minus a 20% discount for a renewal price of £7.96 .................. so it was quite a shock to be told that the charge to my credit card was in US $

I complained about that, because it had to be converted again to Can $ by my cc company, and was higher again.

I worked out that I would end up paying somewhere around £11 by the time all charges were applied!

I was told that GR was now going to be charging members in foreign countries in the currency of their country, but that only applied to certain countries. If you lived in another foreign country that was not included on their "list", then you would be charged in the currency of the nearest country to you.

So, the US was included but not Canada ................. and therefore Canadians would be charged in US $

This is what they said to me in one of the emails last year:-

"With regards to your renewal, I'm afraid we don't accept Canadian Dollars, so the site reverts to the nearest other currency - as you are registered as in Canada, this would be USD.

What we can do, is change your registration to say living in the UK, as this would mean your renewals are taken in GBP. We can always amend this back after a payment has been taken?"

-------

I followed up with:-

"All I want is to be charged in GBP!

That is what has happened every other time since I first joined in 2004.

You might want to re-consider your policy regarding charging in the currency of the country, or the nearest country. There is no doubt that the further conversion from the nearest country's currency to the local currency can in fact cost more for the consumer (subscriber).

I'm NOT suggesting that you increase the number of currencies that you can accept.

But I do suggest that you charge in GBP, and offer that option even if you do accept the local currency.

There have been other people complaining on the boards about being charged in local currency, and feeling that they have thus been charged more than the actual subscription amount. Plus the impossibility of knowing how much we have been charged in GBP, as we do not know the exchange rate that you have used.

I have seen posts from people in Australia and New Zealand, as well as from other Canadians."

----------

I am still registered on GR as being in the UK, because that is the only way in which I can be charged in £ sterling ........ and I shall continue to "live" in the UK as long as they will not offer the option of paying in £ to any member living anywhere in the world. Other sites do, so why not GR?

I recently paid US$14.49 for a six month Standard sub. This was supposed to be with a 20% discount but it is the same as I paid for most of my previous subs since Feb 2009. I think they forgot to take off the discount.

Prior to the last two subs I was always billed in ££. Suddenly it changed to dollars. The present sub is about £9.5 at the current exchange rate. Don't know why they changed from pounds to U.S. dollars. I am living in Canada, not the US.

you're learning, moonbi!

Ann and Joy ..................

.................so how and why did you get to be at £7.50 and me at £9.95 at the same time in 2007?????

weird and wonderful GR !!!!

Following up on recent Emails from GR Accounts

Today I have been offered $27.16 for standard subs. Australia.

So that is a huge difference to the initial $79.95 .

Now I have sent an email asking if that is $27.16 PER month for 12 months

OR $27.16 for the year;

and if the quote is in American Dollars or Australian Dollars.

Awaiting my answer before I tick the box.

Joy

Joy Report 15 Feb 2012 18:04

What is £7.50 minus 20%?

- £6.00 - yes?

And if one had the 20% reduction last year from £7.50 and so paid £6.00 last year, I wonder what would happen the following year.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 15 Feb 2012 16:30

Yes I started on £5 then £7 then £7.50 a year and that so far is where I have stayed.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Feb 2012 22:12

Thank you Persie and Ann

You are quite correct Ann ............ it was when ITV took over, although I cannot remember the actual month that the changes took place!

I do know that I paid £5 a year when I first joined in April 2004, then it went up to £7, then £7.50, and finally to £9.95 a year by the time the takeover happened.

so there were some quite rapid increases there!
