Elizabeth,It makes good sense to add to this if you have a query on using FTM. We will all benefit when our friends come back with their usual good advise.

Inspector - Will make sure that I have copies of everything on my pc in future.
Many thanks :-D

Thank you Ken :-)

Elizabeth,
If you have the person selected then press F3 (or Edit Person) a box with all the facts will pop up. Select Facts and the blue plus symbol and a drop down list appears which includes baptisms.

The age at death is usually calculated from birth and death dates but if you don't know them for sure I should put the age in the description box.

I hope OllietheOwl will not mind my butting in but I also have a queery which concerns FTM

I have just started using (off line at present) the 2010 FTM I was given and cannot see a section for baptisms or where to put the age at death - are they there or do I need to upgrade to get them ?

I must admit that I haven't yet sync'd my tree with Ancestry, although it is on my to-do list. I left it for a while because there were reports that some users were having problems and that some had needed to install software patches for it to work correctly.

All I would add, though is that, in general, if you access media on a subscription site, then if you let your subscription lapse, then you will no longer be able to access those records, so it is important to check you have everything you need to keep downloaded to your PC.

Ancestry also mention that certain records won't sync automatically at the moment so may need to be downloaded / linked manually.

lol Ollie, it obviously works differently to my version.

I don't think it's you, I think it must be poorly designed :)

However, it's good news for you!!!!

You know that saying "Wise as an Owl" well I am obviously not a member of this species.

Have just gone off line and went into a record. and pressed view online copy. Obviously it wouldn't let me. so I went into the media tap (at the top) and there it was !!!!!!

Sorry about this

Never too old to learn new tricks.

That's my point, on my Mac version - when I go offline, I can still access the records & they are connected to the tree.

Why isn't yours like this?

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 7 Feb 2012 20:20

Have just checked this and gone off line and have been able to view them in the my documents folder in family tree. The only downside is that they do not say who i have attached them to.
eg There are 8 separate 1871 census and they show 1871 census.jpg but have to open them all separately to find out who they refer too.
TWIT TWOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I'm pleased you've sorted it Ollie :)

However, after your offline test last night, is there no way to view those records on your tree whilst offline?

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 7 Feb 2012 20:07

Followed your advise and found the folder and guess what = there they were. Am extremely grateful for all the advise given.
Saved me a lot of work.

many thanks to you all <3

Hi Ollie,
I have FTM2012 linked with my Ancestry trees. I've looked in my Documents folder where there is a Family Tree Maker folder That contains folders with names like Smith Tree Media. Those folders seem to contain the census and other images. So if you have those folders your data should be safe.

I have changed the title in the hope that any user of FTM 2012 will be able to help.
Thanks :-D

Thanks Ollie. :) Hope you have a good night. You're obviously off out being a night owl lol

DET's observation seems pretty accurate, as DET suggested Inspector Green Pen (IGP) offers a lot of advice re FTM.

Failing that there are several forums that deal with FTM issues, however, hopefully it won't come to that:

From the way you're describing it, it sounds as if your FTM programme has recorded the details on your computer tree, but the images are retained on the Ancestry site.

If you want to keep the images, unfortunately it sounds as if you will have to down load them to your PC and attach to the relevant event/source references. Rather you than me!

IGP, amongst other's, is an experienced FTM user..if he spots this thread, he may be able to give more detailed advice.

You are NOT a pest lol

You should have EDIT at the top of your thread, click on that and then you should be able to change the title. You then need to save it by clicking on submit.

Hope that works :-D
