hello.
Ive just been looking at the 1901 census at a family member,at the house on census night was a sick nurse(sick was crossed out just leaving nurse)
The family had a wk old baby girl so i expect the nurse was for the child.
my question is,
Would this nurse be just doing a quick visit when the census was taken or would she have been in residence for a while to look asfter the baby?and if so,would the family have had to pay for the nurse?.thanksx :-D

ive looked at the original census on fmp and it says sick nurse/ nurse(sick crossed out but nothing in its place.these people were quite poor,so i wonder how they would have been able to afford a nurse....the mother Ann died in the workhouse hos in 1905 from TB and i wonder if the nurse was for her and not the child(not sure how long she had been suffering from TB when she died)her 3rd child was also born in the workhouse hos and passed away about 3wks after his mother.x

yes joan thats true about doctors,no N.H.S.then..i just wondered how they would have been able to afford it, my gg grandfather Andrew was a dock labourer at the albert docks(they were hired by the day) and although they lived in a house alone,i cant imagine they had much money.
My g grandmother was born in 1898 in scotland,Annie was born 1901 in liverpool,and albert was born in 1905 in the workhouse hos,his mother Ann had TBshe died two wks after giving birth,and poor baby Albert died about 3wks later,Andrew died in 1908 age 38,leaving isabella and Annie orphans.x :-( thank you for your comments.x
