Take advantage of all the free sites and ask questions of family members. They usually have loads of information. See if they have any old papers or certificates hidden away. I had an aunt who, when I asked her questions, would usually say she didn't remember things but would phone me later because something had come back to her. When people get thinking it's amazing what comes to them. Don't disregard any snippets of information no matter how insignificant they seem at first. Oh, and ask all the lovely experts on here who can get every bit as excited about someone else's tree as they can about their own.

Start with what you know. Try to get back to 1911 Census where lots of information can be found.
Ancestry.co.uk usually has a 14 day free trial, take advantage and see how much is available to you.
There are lots of Free sites ie, familysearch.org and freebmd.org.uk not forgetting the hundreds of researchers here itching to help.

Donna,

Who you put on your tree is up to you! Most people follow both of their parents' lines back. Perhaps you could start with your Dad's and then follow up with your Mum's.

There are quite a few sites to help. Try using freebmd for birth, marriage and death registrations from 1837 up to approx 1940.

Also, familysearch for baptisms and marriages before 1837.

If you hit a brick wall, post on the Find Ancestors board - there are lots of very good researchers who help on there. Read through some of the threads and you will see what they can find.

Good Luck!
