In the 1901 census I have a relative Thomas Harmson (York) listed as a lunatic but there is nothing for him in the 1911 at all. He didn't die until the late 1940's so I wondered why he is missing from 1911.

Also is there a way of finding out why he was classified as a lunatic? He was a scholar, then general labourer, had a wife (though in the asylum listed as unmarried) but in 1901 is a lunatic. Who would hold these records?

He could have been listed just by his initials, as this can happen for records in hospitals.
What does it say on his death certificate?
Where was he in 1901?

He appears to be at York Union Workhouse in 1901, and he was born about 1867.

He was in the asylum in 1901 in York. I don't have his death certificate, that is my next step.

I think that the TH that I posted in 1911 is a good match.

I got the death cert and he died in another York mental institution aged 81 and is buried locally in a mass grave. I have sent off for various documents for the workhouse and the other hospital where he was when he died.

Hi yes I did, I have sent off for all material with death certificate etc.
