They used OCR scanners. Unfortunately if the original print is not crystal clear (and some of the papers are very old) then the character recognition just can't cope and substitutes what it thinks the letter in question looks like. |

I had noticed the same thing on the American newspapers that I access. I thought it must be some type of electronic scanner. |

Your better off logging into your local library using your library card and accessing the Nineteenth Centuary Newpapers there. |
