Flick

I am aware of the rules, and have the necessary permissions.

Most of them are already on the internet for other reasons, including the children, who are there, with photos, on the school website. At least I have no photos on my tree.

My son thinks GR's rule is unworkable and a bit of a waste of time, as so many people are on Facebook, Twitter and other networking sites (which I don't understand or use, but then I'm old-fashioned!!) I actually think GR has the right idea, but it's very difficult to enforce.

Kense Report 3 Dec 2011 11:02

In a couple of instances on Ancestry where one of my ancestors has been assigned the wrong spouse, I have created a tree for the wrong spouse in the hope that will guide others. It worked completely in one case but only partially in the other.

Whoever this person was, she should not have included your living relatives without permission from each of them individually

Incidentally, you need that permission also...............GR rule

Thank you all for your comments & help, i thought i was going mad even though i had William Havelock Hughes birth & marriage certs i was beginning to doubt what i was seeing as there are so many other trees with what appears tobe the wrong parents so it seems people must just copy without true facts, thank you all once again

It's not just Ancestry. It happens on GR as well. We have a contact on here who came up with some new Hot Matches (back when you got them regularly) and I discovered that she had our two sons married to the wrong wives, with the children attached to the wrong parents and several people born in places they had never been to!!

As our tree was still showing the correct info, this must have been some very absent-minded copying!

Carol 430181 Report 2 Dec 2011 11:59

Have to add I try not to look at trees on Ancestry any more which is hard as you always think you may crack that brick wall. But there are so many wrong trees on my paternal line now that it makes it a farce.

Yes Carol, only last week saw about 6 trees on Ancestry who had the year and place of death of my gg grandmother which I had been seeking for 14 yrs. I contacted them all asking for more information (already suspecting the reply) which was oh I copied it of so and so.

Ancestry trees are not to be trusted. The Americans seem to delight in copying anything they find in another tree without bothering to check it out. I am blowed if I know how my sister came to marry a man born 176 years before her own father was born. And they quote as source 'Ancestry trees'. And they deny that there is an error in their tree. Grrrrr.

I sent a message to someone who had a definate flaw in his tree on Ancestry. He had a woman having a child at 58 - 20 years after her youngest child was born. He sent a message back saying that he'd got the info. off another tree and hadn't had chance to have a good look at it :-S Looking at the census returns it clearly shows that this child was the child of the woman's daughter who lived with them when the daughter died.

Hi carol, I added a bit on your Havelock Hughes thread: http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1287133

When I was looking on Ancestry I noticed they'd all seemed to fall into the same trap by copying willy-nilly.

I've made a comment on one saying the parents are wrong so let's see if they all pick up the comment.

Ignore any 'info' which doesn't include proof of accuracy.

Public trees on Ancestry are often as unreliable as submitted records on the IGI.

If you have documentation, your own research is what you should rely on
