There is information about messages on the Announcements board.
namely:

Hi everyone,

We will shortly be making some big improvements to the message centre and are currently working on the code behind the scenes. We are trying to make sure we do not effect the live message centre, but you may experience intermittent unavailability today. We will keep this to an absolute minimum.

In the meantime you can look forward to the release of a new and improved message centre that allows you to organise your messages in folders and send messages with attachments plus many other new features!

i had the same problem on wednesday!
I left it for an hour or so then came back and it was working.

I have unread PM's in my inbox, but can't open them. All I get is the GR error message and have to restart the website. Anyone else having problems?

Edit

Just noticed on the stats on the home page that the 'number of PM sent last hour' is 0.
