Im baffled. I need assistance if possible. I have got back to 1822 with my Great, great great grandma Margaret Lynch. It says she was married to Michael Lynch who i think was born about 1836. However, he doesnt actually appear on any records until about 1871 when he married. It says he was born in cumberland but i cannot locate him, is it possible that a man would take his partners surname for some reason. He seems a lot younger than his wife. I also think they live at 13 Front Row (pit houses in w\haven) but this may have already beeen HER childhood home.......it seems weird that i can't find him prior to his marriage even though it says he was born here...... |

Could this be their marriage? Why did you think her maiden name was Lynch? |

The name is Lynch on the original 1871, probably enumerator error: |

On the 61 census Margaret Foy (mistranscribed Fox) is a stepdaughter. Was Margaret Sr. previously married or was Margaret Foy an illegitimate child? |

Thanks to everyone who has helped here im replying this way to all becuase my PC is playing up and keeps going off. So the name"LINCHEY" do you think it is a common name - Marieceleste says its an enumerator error - is this the best way to go , and keep researching LYNCH.....? thanks again to all of you, it would literally be impossible without you and again sorry for replying to all if this is the incorrect thing to do. |

Kerry - I'd originally thought it was enumerator error, but at the bottom of that post I'd put an Edit that they were also using the name Lynch on the 1881 census so it's possible they changed their name slightly. |

MarieCeleste - That makes a lot of sense to me thank you!! I will probably be back with more Questions, I find it difficult to get my head round things. Michael Lynch (Linchey) is a lot younger than his wife, Margaret Foy (or fox) they have a stepdaughter also called Margaret - so not sure if Margaret was married before - it says that the step-daughter was born in Manchester.....which complicates things a bit. |

When you say there's no record of him, I presume you checked the 3 Whitehaven parishes. Maybe you should check the register for Mount Pleasnt parish too. What religion is he based on the 1871 marr. Note a rego office marr could well indicate you need to check RC parish records. |
