Official adoptions did not begin until 1927 ....... but adoptions have always happened, and you will find children shown as adotped even in the 1851 Census
Some "adoptions" were of children of family members or friends, or children taken from orphanages.
"Official" just emans that there are no records of most adoptions before 1927 ........... although orphanages sometimes kept records.
so please don't make assumptions that this must be the child you are seeking!
you really MUST get the birth certificate to be sure!
That most certainly would put closure to the chapter.
It would only cost £9.95 from GRO
peanuts really!

thanks to you all for your help. To Kucinta, re your find claxton, woods and keiton. is the one, for the child stated living with them was so called adopted but a question mark against that for no official adoptions until 1927. Now no record of a child been born of that name in northumberland. Now my request was originally the parents of the child born and died in 1902 in the name of emily claxton. We have proof that a child named emily claxton grew up with the claxton people so did emily kirton take the name emily claxton on moving down to area from northumberland when she was a small child. Coincidently both children born in same year. Without going into much more details, or for any other records to be searched it is only the parents needed for the birth of emily claxton. Absolutely fantastic if this info could be found for once and for all it would close a chapter in a persons life for has for many many years wanted the answer. thanks again for you time, and any further help.

You could check the Claxton families in Birmingham on the 1911 census to see if any of them had a child that died.

Generally the IGI only has records up to the 1880s/90s. Very little after that.

You are going to need the cert- the name Claxton isnt that common, but there are 2/3 families that she could belong to in the area.
