Hi everyone, I'm desperately trying to find info about my g grandad who was estranged from the family since around 1940. I have a death certificate, died 1965 Northumberland South, but no idea where he was between 1940-1965. Is there a way of looking up people in old residential books or things similar to that? He had 8 children and none of them knew him, or even knew when he died. Been to probate office today and it looks as though he didnt make a will.Totally and utterly STUMPED. Any help appreciated! I dont think any info would be on Ancestry as its too late for census records etc.

Does the informant give any clues or his address at the time he died. There were no electoral rolls in WW2 so you cant view those plus I think you need an address anyway to look up electoral rolls. You may be able to find how long he was at his current address before he passed but these would be held at the local main library of the area

Wills on Ancestry only go to 1941.

I've had a look on ancestry and you can view residential phone directories from 1880-1984, it gives an address also. I'm a member but dont have a subscription with them so it wont let me view the results. :-\

George- I was at the probate registry office today and it appears he didnt have a will, thanks though!

Well with the info I have from family it is believed he went back to his mothers house. She was Hannah E Mitchell, widowed for many years, she died in 1938. His name is James Matthew Mitchell, on most documents he just has his middle name as the initial 'M'. He lived in Wallsend, Northumberland England. The last address I have for them from the census is Atkinson Street,Wallsend, whether they stayed there for many years I'm unsure. Thanks so much, if you need any other info please ask! :-)

have you got his mums death cert . he may have been the informant and it should give addresses

Those records are for people who had telephones .not everyone did in the 1940,s onwards.
Think your best bet it to get both death certs as a starter

JoP.....What makes you think he was in a Residential Home...?
They were few and far between at the time in question and usually only for those who could pay privately.
What does his death cert say....?
What religion was he..?

Eringo, to be honest I'd rather you didnt comment on my threads, as every time you do I find your way of words to be very negative. I didnt say anything about a residential home?!

Your last post eringo has proved my point. Its the attitude you put across. I havent long been a member of this and yes i have thanked you for your help, as i have everyone, but i find many of your responses undermining and quite intimidating - speaking as a relatively new user. Just being honest. Sorry if you dont like that.

No one enjoys being made to feel stupid, especially when relatively new to genes reunited and family history search in general. I have thanked you for your help and that is sincere, but you have also made me feel stupid which i think is unfair. I think many would agree this whole thing can be quite intimating when first starting off, it is nice to be helpful, but please bear in mind, not all of us know the ropes as well as you do. Hello Joey123, I am sure that no-one intended to make anyone feel stupid but sometimes when trying to help we all have different ways of progressing. This sometimes leads us to ask questions that may appear negative but have a genuine reason for asking.

That aside if I were trying to find a relative,having got the death certificate, that would pinpoint the exact date of the death. The majority of deaths appear in the local paper.These will be available at the local library. (someone on here may be able to help) Back in 1965, not as now, most of the information on the deceased would be printed. This would state the date of death (to cross reference the death cert) together with the address where the deceased came from. It would give any relative (might have married again in the 25yrs of estrangement).Where the deceased ended up (cremation or burial).From the address it would be possible to check the electoral rolls on a yearly basis which would indicate how long your relative was at his last address.Hope this might help-jl
