National Archives page 'Looking for records of a naturalised Briton' which has lots of useful information and a facility that name searches the relevant sections of the NA catalogue.

The National Archives has some naturalisation records.

Have not had any success on Ancestry but the person I am looking for is:-

Joseph Ferrier/Ferreiro/Ferreira
Born c1833 in Madeira, Portugal, father Antonio
Married Elizabeth McCully 15 Apr 1859 South Shields
From then on known as Ferrier.
Was seaman in Merchant Service.
Died 1913 South Shields
