I would think the R.E. stands for Royal Engineers, but not sure what the CDY is for. I thought it might have been CPY for 17th Company but haven't a clue about CDY. |

I would say it is The Royal Engineers, how sure are you about the CDY bit, could it be CPY which relates to Company. |

I was hoping he might turn up on FMP military records, alas nothing shows for him. |

Is this him in the 1891 census with his family? :- |

If the above George is the correct one then in 1901 he was a Messenger to an Admiralty Civil Engineer. |

I cannot find any military connection to this man and if Kath's findings are correct he may have been a civilian Civil Engineer working with the army that would make sense as the inscription Say's, token of respect from comrades of the 17th CDY R.E. at Aldershot |

Just had another thought, the grave stone does say Lance Corp William G Podd, would he have this even if he was just a civilian working with the army?? |

If it says Lance Corp or L/cpl then he is not a civilian, |

It does say Lance Corp George W Podd, sorry for not thinking to give you all this information right at the beginning! |

The death certificate may be worth buying as this may give extra information as to whether or not his death was work related. |
