hi.. can anyone help me please.. i'm new to all this and have already come to a massive brick wall. i am searching for my grandads dad, edward johnson. this may be a long shot as i dont have a lot of info.
i think edward may have died in 1957 ish. dont know his birth year, i am pretty sure his wife was called margaret and think she may have been from dumfries. edward lived in the ryton area, gateshead.
edward had 4 sons, robert, william, malcolme and edward.
william bendall johnson (1927-1978) is my grandad. he married georgina wilkinson (1927-1992) in 1949. they went on to have 6 children, ritson, stuart, keith, raymond, marie and june.
keith (my father) was born in 1957.
all of the above lived in ryton, gateshead/durham. apart from margaret.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
rachel xx

It's possible that this could be Edward and Jane's marriage:-

Name: JOHNSON, Edward
Registration District: South Shields
County: Durham
Year of Registration: 1877
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912
Volume No: 10A
Page No: 787

On the same page is Jane Ross McRobie.

You would need Edward Errington Johnson's birth certificate to confirm his mother's maiden name.

I use Findmypast for look-ups and am used to looking up births, deaths and marriages.

KathleenBell Report 30 Aug 2011 01:07

The 1891 Scottish census that Lindsey found has a Mary Jane Bendall listed.

It may have been a mis-transcription of Margaret Jane. The family are living in Kirkcudbrightshire which is what Margaret Jane gives as her birthplace.

The only Edward E. Johnson death I can see around 1940 of the right sort of age in the north-east is this one:-

Name: JOHNSON, Edward E
Registration District: Newcastle upon Tyne
County: Northumberland
Year of Registration: 1941
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 61
Volume No: 10B
Page No: 145

Not sure how you could be certain it was "your" Edward though without buying the certificate.

What makes you think he died around 1940 because in your first post you said you thought he died around 1957?

Rachel Report 30 Aug 2011 22:42

i thought he died in the same year that my dad was born, but after talking to my dad i found out it was edwards wife, margaret that died in 1957.

dad said he thinks edward died when william ( edwards son ) was about 13... but cant be sure

thank you for your help xx

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Aug 2011 22:47

In that case I think the death above could be a good possibility.

This looks like Margaret's death:-

Name: JOHNSON, Margaret J
Registration District: Durham North Western
County: Durham
Year of Registration: 1957
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 72
Volume No: 1A
Page No: 451

Durham North Western registration district covered Ryton.
