Thank you for repltying so quickly.

I am looking for a Mary Mugridge born approx 1871. She appears on the census 1891 in Hull, Yorkshire under the name of Mary Adams. I am assuming her maiden name was Mugridge, it could have been Spurling.
Any help appreciated.

Sorry - I can't see her under either name. The records on Ancestry apear just relate to newspaper adverts in England of births in India

I wonder if she was Mary Chisham but I don't think that would help re the birth?

I've looked on the British Library website, which has free access to papers of the Indian Office (http://indiafamily.bl.uk) and on the indexed armed forces and overseas BMDs but there's no reference to a Mary Mugridge or Spurling at around that date, I'm afraid.

Or more likely (because she is referred to variously as Margaret or Mary

Scratch the last one - I'm afraid she died same year.

Hello Kim,

Thank you for all your work you have done for me. I have been away for a couple of days so have not been on the computer.

I will get all the facts together and contact you during the week. I live in Bexhill which is next to Hastings and there are so many mugridges still living in this area. I actually went to visit some of the houses they lived in on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses. I took photos for my cousin who I am helping with the Mugridges.
We are both from the Gardiner family in Hull. I was actually born in Hull.

Hello Kim,

I have found a Mary Adams on the 1901 census married to a George Adams in Warwickshire. This mary is also born in Bombay! She is the same age as the Mary I am looking for. His occupation is a Gun Maker.
It seems such a coincidence that two Mary Adams born in Bombay in the same year. What do you think?

This is the Mary Adams you found in 1901 in 1891 with husband George so it can't be the same Mary unless she was recorded twice in the 1891 census

Thank you for your prompt reply. This family is realy causing problems. I cannot get my head round it. I Cannot make out the relationship between the Spurlings and the Mudgridges on the 1891 census. It looks like Richards wife must already have died so I assume the father Roichard was looking after the children. I wonder where they lived. I know Richard died in Hull 1904.
Will have to keep looking. This is for my cousin Glenda, she lives in Hull but does not have a computer. Her grandfather James Richard Gardiner (my dads brother) married Lily Mugridge whos first husband George Henry Mugridge died in 1914. She had three children by George at the time she married my uncle. She then went onto to have another five children. Do you live in Hull?
I talk to Glenda nearly everyday so will have to ask for more details on this side of her family.
