have made contact with a newly found relative to receive a somewhat and terse answer.
I was told that " as we are only related by marriage" she intends to do nothing about my request or persue those questions and will take no further action.
I was under the impression that many, if not most, of the family tree elements were created by people marrying each other....
obviously wrong

It may depend on how far apart you are ...

I have had someone connected to my father's line - we share a gr gr grandfather - copy details of my mother's line. Why? He is not related to my mother or to any ancestors of my mother. It drives me mad and many others on here can tell you similar stories.

Perhaps that's why you've had that sort of response?

no, people, at least those on boards other than General Chat, will not think you have changed your name for "other reasons"


I changed my name from Sylvia years ago because there was another Sylvia posting at the time .......... I got fed up of adding (in Canada) to my signature to distinguish between us.


I do find I don't like being addressed as Hi SylviaInCanada!

Back to the original thread - don't take it personally. I'm sure there will be someone else out there who can help fill any gaps this other person isn't willing to help with.
I have an aunt who refused to give us any details about herself & her kids - my cousins - and as I am on the other side of the world I don't hear from them anymore (since she passed away). I don't even know her maiden name as yet but I will find the information on my own.
Yes we all pick & choose who to add. I, like PigletsPa,l try to keep with blood relatives but whenever I am contacted by, or find someone researching my family & we are connected I like to add their immediate line from original connection to see how we are related. I have managed to put my mother in touch with second cousins that she didn't know but she remembers their grandfather so I have fun listening to her stories about the older members of the family as well as finding relatives.
I think half the fun is in hearing what the older generation can relate and this brings them closer even if the tree says they are distant relatives.
