My Gt Gt Grandfather had a leg amputated here in Sept 1807.
He was a soldier in the 23rd Regiment of Foot and was discharged on to an outpatient pension. Where can I find out what led up to the operation and why?

His Army records may have survived. Those on a pension seem to have been kept. I got my ancestors Army record from The National Archives,Kew. he was in the Army from 1825-1849 and came out on a pension as a Chelsea Pensioner- Out.

Hi Shirley,
Thanks for the information, I have tried looking at the National Archives web page for any info, but seem to get nowhere re the reason for the hospital admission and operation and his subsequent out patients pension.As I live in Australia I cannot get to the N.A. to search for myself.
