The National Archives Documentsonline site only has Royal Navy records for those joining up to 1923. |

At 04.15 hours on 19 Dec, 1941, the HMS Stanley (I 73) (LtCdr D.B. Shaw, RN, OBE) was hit by two of three torpedoes from U-574, while on station astern of the convoy HG-76 and immediately sank about 330 miles west of Cape Sines, Portugal. The U-boat was sunk 12 minutes after the attack by HMS Stork (L 81), which later picked up the survivors from HMS Stanley (I 73) together with HMS Samphire (K 128). |

Hi every one im doing my family tree and wanting to trace records of a cousin of mine who was in the royal navy. His name was Ernest Barrett born in 1918 in Barnsley south Yorkshire. He died on the HMS Stanley ship in 1941. I do have his service number but from what i have read to apply for information about him it as to be his next of kin. His mum is dead all my grammers and grandads have passed away and ive i have no birth certificate of him or any thing only informion ive got of the net. I would love to get some more information about about his royal navy career but not sure where to look or who could help me. if any one as done this befire or any one could advise be id realy appreiate it thank you so much x rachel |
