I have just received a death certificate of my 4x great grandfather Edward NOBLE who died 28 January 1874 aged 76 at Tyneside Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne. The cause of his death was quote 'hanged himself by the neck with a rope' the
informant was the office of John T Holye Coroner for Newcastle. Inquest was held 29 January 1874.

Where could I find any records of the inquest. I have checked Tyne & Wear Archives and there records start at 1904 also looked at the online library for inquests from 28 January to 28 February with no luck.

Anyone any ideas. I am unable to visit personally as I live in New Zealand

I think that you have already covered all the bases where you may have been able to find anything. If the local archive has not got records going back that far then the coroners records are probably long gone.

By what is recorded on the actual death certificate it does not sound as if it was too complicated an issue. The poor chap had probably just had enough and decided to end it all.

Small consolation I know but I have a similar situation in my tree. My 4xGreat Grandmother ended her life by slitting her own throat in 1843. I have never been able to find an inquest report about that.

There may have been a report of the inquest in the local newspapers. The library nearest to the address may hold back copies on microfilm.

You should be able to Google for the email address of the library and as you can't visit in person they may be willing to look for you since you have the exact date of death and inquest.

This is the library in Newcastle upon tyne. It says that they do some free searches such as looking in newspapers. That is where you should find a coroners report.

Some inquest and coroners reports have survived the years. I am fortunate enough to have them for ancestors from Suffolk in the 1870s. They can be really interesting.

I've never quite understood this part.
The coroners owned their reports. Did they have to file them somewhere?

Sad but I've the same thing on my maternal grandfathers death cert. It makes sickening reading. I also tried to get more details but as others are saying they distroyed old records. I even went to the national archives to checlk. Seems a shame but so much was lost from the past.

I too felt very sad when I received the certificate up until then the worst I had was several great grandparents dying in the Knaresborough workhouse.

Well my genealogy friends, the very helpful Library and Information Assistant
of the Newcastle City Library was quick in answering my request but unfortunately there was nothing in either of the two newspapers that they hold. So like many of you I will have to live without further information.
