My gt grandfather was in the Staffordshire regiment but he has an army medical in Newport Monmouthshire on 4th Oct 1886 before he joined at Lichfield on Oct 7th 1886? Why would it be in Newport? I would like to find out reason why as i am having trouble tracing info on him. Any ideas folks? Has any one else come across something like this?

Where was he living when he enlisted?

It could be that he was just sent to the nearest place available where Army medicals were being carried out at the time.

Well on 1901 & 1911 census he claims born Wolverhampton but no trace of birth. On army papers he claims born Coventry! No sing there either.

Hired a researcher at one point. If fact 2 and no joy!!
Only possible is 1871 census Joseph Lewis occupation blacksmith age 40 wife Emma age 33 son William age 11 and Thomas age 5 Bordesley st CentralBirmingham 100 yards from Jamaica Row which was on John Joseph Lewis, army paper when Joseph was listed as his next of kin. There is no John there though unless he was with grandparents. Its proving it thats the problem.
3 possibles of marriage of Joseph to an Emma:

1864 Coventry to Emma Harriett Hall
1858 Birmingham to an Emma Luccock
1869 Kings Norton to an Emma Slater.
researcher reckons the Emma Luccock is most likely!

I went to school in Bath and then joined the WRNS. My interview and medical were in Bristol, but I had to have a second one, which was in London because that was the area they were recruiting in at the time. (The following month they were in Manchester.)

Don't know if this from the 1861 census could be a clue, I think others that know more would probably say the "in-law" actually means stepchild.

Yes William Lewis born 1899 was my grandad. Just wondering wether to order marriage cert of Joseph Lewis & Emma Luckett and see if it gives me anyone more clues. Thing is its just a stab in the dark!
