I have just received a Marriage cert that i sent off for and i noticed that where the bride and groom had to sign their names it said. .. |

Usually, yes. But occasionally it could be the case that the registrar just assumed they couldn't and just asked them to make a mark. |

It means that they couldn't sign their own name and put the cross which was witnessed. |

X sometimes with "her mark" was generally for someone who couldnt read and write. |
