Quite often they would not remarry, but any children that a woman had before would be given the new man's surname. |

No they didnt,This is why some got away with remarrying bigmously when the marriage failed. This applied to both male & female |

did women have to show proof of their husbands death before marrying again in the mid 19th century. |
