I wondered that Huia. I think he got his comeuppance though as when he died in 1879 he had spent the previous 5 years with some form of paralysis!

In our family twins were told their mother was dead when in fact she was in a mental hospital. They were sent to live with an aunt. Ironically, she was just a few streets away from where they were growing up. The truth only came out years later.

My g grandparents married in 1923 - after having 8 children!
GGrandmother took my g grandfather's name prior to this - and his name is on all the birth certs.
We wouldn't have known about this if my gran hadn't found their marriage cert at a particular time- when she wanted to marry my gandad in 1924.
G grandma objected because, as she said, he was 'soiled goods' ie a widower. Gran found her parents' marriage certificate - and I can imagine the holiest of rows taking place, with the word 'hypocrite' being one of the more pleasant words used!! LOL

On the wedding certificate, g grandma is a 'spinster' - g grandpa is a 'bachelor'.
In reality, he had married someone in London over 20 years before, and waited until she died before marrying g grandma.
His first wife, was, allegedly in a mental asylum - and spouses weren't allowed to divorce if their 'other half' was incarcerated.
