Good day all. Wonder if anyone can help. When my natural mother re-married, my "new" dad adopted me in 1968, I have the certificate, would there have been a file on me and if so how do I go about getting it. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Possibly only a court record as its was Mum and her new hubby who adopted you. Its not as if Social Services or other agencies were involved,
I have a "relative" who had a son who when she married, her hubby and her !! adopted him .Why her well that was a legal formality,as she adopted him in her married name so he took that surname. The boys natural father had to agree to waive his parental rights ,They only have the court papers for when his adoption took place.

I'm not certain but I don't think there would be the same sort of file as there would have been if you had been adopted out of the family.

I think adoption by a step parent is a legal formality - I doubt social services were even involved

A 'Mother's own' adoption is not recorded in the same way as an adoption by unrelated people of a third person's child.

There is no file....................

It is a strange quirk of our legal system that the natural mother also has to 'adopt' the child. This is to ensure that the child's legal surname, and that of the mother are the same once the adoption process is complete
